Choosing a Camping Location
Start by choosing a town near your destination. Then scan the directory for a camping location that offers your desired amenities and camping fee price range. Then go to their website for more information and reservation details. You can choose from more expensive deluxe accommodations with full camping services to low cost or free primitive camping in remote backcountry areas, away from towns and services. Check seasonal availability. Many sites are open year-round, but some are only open during peak season, May 1st thru October 1st.
Location choices include county parks, state parks, national parks, BLM land, state wildlife areas, reservoirs, commercial RV parks and campgrounds, KOA, Walmart, and camping with permission on private property. Most locations require advance reservations, some are first come first served. Choose a primary location and a backup location in case your first choice is fully booked.
A variety of amenities are offered including RV hookups, dump station, restrooms, showers, laundry, pet area, WiFi, cable TV, picnic tables, fire rings, barbecue grills, pavilions, playground, hot tub, pool, clubhouse, social activities, games, golf, convenience store, propane, firewood, cabins, swimming, fishing, boating, hiking, scenery, wildlife viewing, and senior or membership discounts.
Some sites offer camping for tents or RVs or both. Some remote locations may require 4-wheel drive on dirt roads.
Camping Safety Tips
Be prepared and carry food, water, prescriptions, flashlights, NOAA weather alert radio (station WXM 54, Alamosa, 162.475 MHz), blankets, rain gear, emergency supplies, and a first aid kit. Supervise children carefully. Beware of and do not feed wild animals. Stay on trails. Do not trespass on private property. Wear a life jacket when boating, rafting, wading, fishing and water skiing. Check your cell phone signal strength in case you need to make an emergency call. Consider carrying two-way radios to communicate with other members of your party.
